Coconut Oil Pulling

Coconut oil is rich in saturated fats. Extracted from coconut meat, this is an edible oil that has many health benefits. What sets coconut oil apart from other oils is how it’s made — with medium-chain triglycerides, like lauric acid, rather than long-chain fatty acids. What does this mean? It means that coconut oil can be easily broken down by the human body into what is called monolaurin. Both monolaurin and lauric acid aid the body by killing off bacteria and viruses.

So how does this relate to your teeth?

Well, the lauric acid that is found in coconut oil can kill bacteria that’s found in the mouth. If you struggle with tooth decay, gum disease, or even just bad breath, coconut oil can help out by getting rid of nasty bacteria and viruses that starts to grow in a method call coconut oil pulling, which has been used for thousands of years. In fact, oil pulling originates from India.

So how does it work? It’s pretty simple.

Oil Pulling Instructions:

  • Measure out a tablespoon of coconut oil.
  • Put the coconut oil in your mouth and start to swish it around.
  • Continue swishing the oil around for 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure to push it all around and between your teeth to get hard-to-reach crevices.
  • After you’ve been swishing for 15 to 20 minutes, spit the coconut oil out. If you want to avoid a clogged pipe in your bathroom sink, it’s best to rid of it in a trashcan or the toilet.
  • Finish the process up by brushing your teeth.

As you can see, oil pulling is easy and highly effective. It’s best to do this when you wake up in the morning before you’ve eaten breakfast or drink anything.
