Bleeding gums are common problem. Brushing too hard, using too hard of a toothbrush, gum injury, and pregnancy are all non-disease factors that can cause bleeding gums. However, for most people bleeding gums are a sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease (gum disease).
Bleeding gums are usually the first sign of early gingivitis. If not taken care of gingivitis will continue to get worse and eventually turn into periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. The good news is that using our tips below, you can easily reverse these early symptoms and stop your gums from bleeding.
How To Stop Bleeding Gums:
Eat A Healthier Diet:
By eating a healthier diet, you can heal your gums and prevent further gum disease. Look for foods high in vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin B3. These vitamins are essential for gum health; they accelerate healing and reduce swelling. Some examples of gum healthy food include Leafy greens – contain high levels of vitamin C, Onions – naturalize bacteria that cause gum disease, Green tea – fights inflammation of the gums, Water – helps wash away plaque-forming films and keeps protective saliva flowing.
Switch to A Soft Bristle Toothbrush:
The majority of Americans use hard or medium bristle toothbrushes thinking the harder the bristles the more cleaning power they have. This is in fact not true. Hard/Medium bristles aren’t able to sweep under the gum line and remove plaque as well as soft bristle brushes, leading to a build up of plaque under the gum line – a major factor in gum disease. Hard/Medium bristles are also too rough on the gums which can cause them to bleed or develop sores.
Salt Water Rinse:
Rinsing with salt water is one of the easiest things you can do to help stop your gums from bleeding. All you need is salt and warm water, which most people already have in their homes. Rinsing with salt water can help kill and wash away bacteria that causes gum disease. It will also help reduce inflammation and soothe sore gums. After brushing try rinsing for 30 seconds with a solution of 1tsp salt and 4 oz warm water.
Drink Green Tea:
Green tea contains a natural antioxidant called catechin that lowers the body’s inflammatory response to mouth bacteria. Because of this, drinking green tea on a daily basis may help reverse periodontal disease and stop bleeding gums. Aim to drink 3-4 cups of green tea a day (without sugar) to help fight gum disease and bleeding gums.
Stress can cause inflammation and has a negative effect on the immune system. When you are stressed for long periods of time your gums may become inflamed and your body may not be able to fight off the mouth bacteria known for causing gum disease. During stressful periods people are also more likely to neglect their oral health, forgetting to brush/floss, eating things with lots of sugar and refined carbs.
If you are unable to reduce your stress level, at least make time for yourself and your oral health during these stressful periods. Make sure to brush twice a day, floss daily, and avoid sugary and acidic foods that are bad for your oral health.
Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide:
After brushing rinse with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide rinses will remove plaque, promote gum health, and stop gum bleeding. A recent study found those that rinsed with hydrogen peroxide after brushing had lower amounts of inflammation than those that didn’t rinse with hydrogen peroxide after brushing.
Make Sure to Brush Twice A Day & Floss:
Since bleeding gums are typically caused by bad oral hygiene you can reverse this symptom by improving your oral health routine. Make sure you are brushing twice a day for 2 minutes at a time. Make sure to focus on all the different angles of your teeth and pay extra attention to your gum line.
Also, be sure to incorporate flossing once a day. When you floss you remove the plaque and bacteria that is stuck below the gum line – a major cause of gum disease. Flossing may feel uncomfortable or even slightly painful at first and your gums may bleed – this is because your gums are inflamed and haven’t been properly taken care of. However, after a few weeks, as your gum health improves, the pain and bleeding while flossing will go away.
On top of all the other health issues, smoking does a lot of damage to gum tissue. Smoking can lead to gum inflammation and can block essential nutrients from getting to you gums. This creates weak inflamed gums that are a target for gum disease causing bacteria. These issues aren’t exclusive to cigarettes, any type of tobacco will cause these issues and more. So, stay away from smoking hookah or using chewing tobacco as well.
Don’t Share Drinks, Utensils, or Food:
Gum disease is contagious. If you are already suffering from bleeding gums you could pass it to someone else by sharing drinks, utensils, or food. Plus, they may be suffering from bleeding gums as well and it’s harder to fight gum disease if you keep reintroducing gum disease bacteria into your mouth through shared items.
